DeeAnne's bible Study.
These are the notes that I took from DeeAnne's bible study on Tuesday, and we went through Psalm 18 in it's entirety.
She gave a short introduction explaining that life is not fair and that suffering is not pleasant.
Verses 1-3:
David uses war terms. He is mighty warrior who was very successful in his battles because the Lord gave him success. But here he does not forget that it is the Lord that gave him success and that he needs the Lord.
Meaning of the Hebrew word translated as Horn:
Horn, pair of horns, something made of horns: wind instrument, container; horn often symbolizes strength and status, as in "horn of salvation"
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as shield:
shield used for defense, usually of oiled leather; by extension: ruler, a leader who protects; fig. of the impregnable scales of the leviathan
4-5:
David is very descriptive of the bad things happening to him.
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as destruction:
wicked one, vile one, evil one, worthless one, transliterated "Belial"; A "son of Belial" or "Man of Belial" is a troublemaker and scoundrel: wicked, scoundrels, destruction, vile
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as grave:
grave, by extension, realm of death, deepest depths, transliterated as "Sheol"
6:
From his temple, the Lord was focusing on David's voice.
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as temple:
A building of some kind: temple, sanctruary, palace; main hall
7-19:
God protected David in his most dire moment. He displayed great power and authority over everything in rescuing David, because he delights in him.
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as most high:
Most High, a title of God with a focus on supremacy in status and power
16-24:
David gives credit to God, but is honest about why God favors him: Not because he is free from sin, but because he repents when he does sin, and seeks after God.
20-25:
To the faithful you show yourself faithful: Two different Hebrew words are used, one referring to humans, the other referring the God.
The first is: (masculine adjective) godly, saints, the people of God with a focus on their faithfulness;
The second is: (verb) to conduct oneself as faithful:-- show yourself faithful
30:
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as flawless: (adjective)
(verb) to smelt, refine (metals); (noun)(gold- or silver-)smith
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as shield: (noun)
shield used for defense, usually of oiled leather; by extension: ruler, a leader who protects; fig. of the impregnable scales of the leviathan
31-36:
David has confidence in everything he does. He uses terminology that:
-gives credit to God for everything
-1.acknowledges that God keeps his path straight, or b.keeps him on a straight path
-gives God credit for being trained.
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as rock: (noun)
rock; stone mass, rocky crag; a title of God, with a focus of stability, and possibly as a place of security and safety.
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as perfect: (adjective)
without defect, blameless, perfect, OR: (verb)to complete, finish, perfect; to end, stop complete;
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as stoop: (in english it's a verb, but in hebrew it was a feminine noun)
humility:- humility, stoop down
Meaning of the hebrew word translated as broaden: (verb)
to be wide; to swell (with joy); to boast to be roomy, be broad;
David knew, and we should know, that God deosn't take problems away, but He will help us through them.
37-45:
God gave David many victories.
46-50:
David gives strong praise to God for his deeds.
